#17 – Because It Is Bitter, and Because It Is My Heart by Joyce Carol Oates

22 02 2008

I have long been a fan of Joyce Carol Oates. She has written a tremendous number of books, so much of her work remains for me to discover.

Because It Is Bitter, and Because It Is My Heart is a thought provoking read.

Have you ever had a true connection with someone? Although you don’t know them very well, an event occurs and now you truly know them?

This is what happened to Jinx Fairchild and Iris Courtney. It is the late 1950’s. Of different races, these high school students are brought together through the events of one terrible night. It is a bond that lasts the rest of their lives, though they are never truly close in the sense of spending a lot of time together. It is the event that makes them know each other “better than anyone else”.

If you have not read any of Oates’ work, this might be a good place to start…
